ACC PoolSafe®

In October 2001 the ACC PoolSafe® Quality Management Scheme for public pools was launched. This scheme assesses pools for industry standards including supervision guidelines, emergency action plans, water quality, Health and Safety and the ‘Pool Alone’ supervision policy for children. The scheme is managed by Water Safety New Zealand Inc on behalf of the New Zealand Recreation Association whom is fully involved with the assessment of pools, re-writing the lifeguard manual and reviewing drowning fatalities at public pools.

There are approximately 200 public pools in New Zealand which are eligible to be ACC PoolSafe® certified. Of those pools 147 are currently ACC PoolSafe® certified, The Leisure Centre being one of them. For further information visit the ACC PoolSafe® website on www.poolsafe.org.nz <http://www.poolsafe.org.nz> .

Pool Lifeguard Practicing Certificate (PLPC)

The PLPC is the minimum qualification for swimming pool lifeguards. The PLPC is administered through Skills Active Aotearoa Ltd.

The PLPC consists of four pool lifeguarding unit standards. To attain the PLPC a candidate must obtain the Pool Lifeguard Skills Award (PLSA) by completing approximately 20 hours training, PLSA assessment and 20 hours work experience as a pool lifeguard. Once this is complete and the candidate is competent they will be assessed through the PLPC assessment programme, normally 8 hours.
